Control of Thrips on Cucumbers, 1985

Cucumbers were planted 21 Mar at Waimanalo Experiment Station, Waimanalo, HI. Treatment plots consisted of 3 rows, 6.09 m long by 4.57 m wide. Plants within the row were 0.45 m apart. Treatments were replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Insecticide applications were made 14 and 30 May, by hand using a ‘Maruyama Power Sprayer’, with a single nozzle which was operated at 100 psi to deliver 100 gal/acre. Thrips counts were made on leaves on 6 May, 20 May, and 5 Jun. Populations of thrips were recorded by examining 10 randomly selected leaves (third fully expanded leaf from tip) per plot. Prior to counting, thrips were fixed in place by application of an aerosol hairspray over both surfaces of sampled leaves.
