Eight insecticides were evaluated in Jun ’84, in Bedford Co, VA, for their effectiveness in controlling the true armyworm in no-till field corn when applied as preemergence tank mix treatments with recommended herbicides and 30% liquid nitrogen. Corn was planted in 30 inch rows on 1 May. Plots were established in a randomized complete block design measuring 4 rows by 50 ft by 4 replicates. The insecticides, herbicides, and liquid nitrogen were applied on 2 May. A compressed air sprayer equipped with 2 Teejet 8004 fan-type nozzles and delivering 50 gal/acre at 30 lb/sq inch was used for placement of the treatments over each plot. Two passes were made through each plot to assure uniform coverage of the rye cover crop. Plant stand counts were recorded on 7 Jun by counting the total number of plants in the 2 center rows per plot. Armyworm damage was also evaluated on 7 Jun by recording the number of damaged plants in the 2 center rows per plot.
