The experiment was a 9 x 6 randomized complete block design planted May 30, 1975 at Presque Isle, Maine on land which was fallow in 1974. The 9.14 m space between blocks was bare soil. The space between columns was machine planted with 4 rows of healthy, untreated seed (56.7 g), 30.5 cm apart. Each plot consisted of 4 rows, 0.86 m apart and 15.24 m long. The 56.7 g healthy seed pieces were hand planted 30.5 cm apart. Fertilization and hilling were normal for the area. Late blight control was effected by weekly foliar applications of Rohm &amp; Haas M45 (1121 ga i/ha July 9 to 31, 1681 ga i/ha August 4 to 20 and 2242 ga i/ha August 25 to 28). Seed treatments were made just prior to planting. Soil treatments were made in the furrow just prior to planting or as a side dressing prior to hilling. Foliar applications were made with a Slosser sprayer (14.1 kg/cm2 and 1.2 kl/ha). Numbers of egg masses, larvae, and adults were counted on 25 whole plants in the center rows of each plot. Analyses of variance were calculated following transformation of the raw data using log10(x + 1). Means of sum of all stages of the beetle were compared with Duncan’s new multiple range test and reconverted in the Table. The soil was classified as Caribou Loam, pH 5.2. For the growing season, rainfall was about 80% of normal and temperatures were about 2°C above normal.
