Summary and conclusion My critique of the current discourse on empower-ment is similar to Woodall et al.’s [1], yet our rec-ommendations for action based on this diagnosisdiffer. Specically, while I agree that the prevalenceof individualistic notions of empowerment arerelated to the ascendant neoliberal ideology andare responsible for much of empowerment’s ter-minological dilution, I would nevertheless cautionscholars and practitioners against neglecting anylevel of analysis, including the psychological level.Instead, I urge increased familiarity with psycho-logical empowerment, which has been conceptua-lized ecologically as a multilevel construct [3, 4]that is inextricable from organizational andcommunity-level empowerment. Likewise, it is im-portant to adjust practices and research programs inaccordance with this multilevel framing [28].Further, I recommend greater attention to psycho-logical empowerment as a multi-component con-struct [9, 14].
