In recent European Policy concerning health and safety at\udwork, gender, together with age, geographical origin and\udcontractual condition, become an important aspect to be\udconsidered in order to ensure for all workers a well-being at\udwork, which must be jointly targeted by all of those involved.\udIn particular, the gender perspective should imply to consider\udnot only biological differences between male and female\udworkers, but also the social role they really play in the current\udsociety.\udDescription of the problem\udThe University of Pisa, through Italian Workers’\udCompensation Authority (INAIL), has carried out a scientific\udresearch with the aim of giving prevention tools in the ‘‘gender\udbased risk assessment’’ field. The methodology was based on a\udmultidisciplinary approach (study group composed of occupational\udhygienists, occupational physicians and sociologists)\udwith the common goal of supporting employers and the\udcompanies in assessing occupational risks in a gender\udperspective.\udResults\udThe research path has allowed us to develop processes and\udtools, easy to use and useful for assessing the degree of\udintegration of gender in the risk management and prepare the\uddocument for risk assessment accordingly. To facilitate the\uddrafting, a tool for self-evaluation of the risk assessment\uddocument in a gender perspective was designed and some\udmaps of the area and risk fact sheets that summarize the\udcurrent scientific knowledge in relation to gender were\udproduced. These tools are being evaluated in a voluntary\udtrial and then they will be available on the website for INAIL\udcompanies.\udLessons\udThe risk assessment must take into account all the factors, both\udbio-physiological and cultural, that can interact with certain\udagents or hazardous conditions and with risk perception itself.\udOnly by considering all these aspects in a multidimensional\udway it will be possible to take preventive measures and\udappropriate protection for risk management in a gender\udperspective.\udKey message\ud For the health and safety of all workers it’s important to\udassess the occupational risks according to a gender\udapproach, taking into account all the peculiarities that\udcharacterize both men and women\ud444 European Journal of Public Health, Vol. 25, Supplement 3, 201
