The complex molecular mechanisms underlying spontaneous cardiac pacemaking are not fully understood. Recent findings point to a co-ordinated interplay between intracellular Ca(2+) cycling and plasma membrane-localized cation transport determining the origin and periodicity of pacemaker potentials.
