The average time for a seek arm to travel from a random starting cylinder to a random sought cylinder is determined for a non-linear, two-headed large format disc and for a hypothetical small format disc of the future. If both heads are attached to a single seek arm, the average time to travel is minimized when the logical offset between the heads is approximately 0.46N, where there are N logical cylinders on the disc. Two heads attached to a single seek arm outperform independent heads (where each head is attached to its own seek arm). Two-headed discs give an average time to travel improvement of about 30% compared with their single headed equivalents.
