This study describes the esophageal cancer methylation landscape and its impact on gene expression. Genes aberrantly methylated suggest a mechanism that could lead to genomic instability and chromothripsis. A CpG island methylator phenotype-like subtype with potentially worse clinical outcome was also identified.
