The Brahma (SMARCA2) gene product, a cofactor of retinoblastoma (RB), is consistently upregulated by flavonoids and is required for flavonoid-mediated growth arrest and inhibition of tumor development in mice. Flavonoids convert RB into its hypophosporylated state, thereby activating it as well as inducing BRM, and together they function to inhibit growth.

Flavonoids from each of the six structural groups reactivate BRM, a possible cofactor for the anticancer effects of flavonoids
