Evaluation of Gaucho Seed Treatments for Control of Thrips on Cotton in Mississippi, 1995

Insecticides were evaluated at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center, Verona, MS, in a RCB design with 5 replications. Plot size was 4 rows (38 inch spacing) wide by 50 ft long with no untreated buffer rows. Insecticides were applied as seed treatments planted with a John Deere 7100 planter equipped with cone planters. Plots were sampled 4 times on 5 to 7 d intervals by collecting 5 plants at random by cutting plants at ground level and gently placing them in Ziploc bags for transportation to the lab. Samples were then washed with a mixture of Clorox, water and a drop of dishwashing detergent into a sieve with 125 micron openings and backwashed onto filter paper. Adults were identified by use of a dissection microscope, and representative insects were mounted on microscope slides for verification of those identifications by use of phase contrast microscopy. Over 95% of the adults were tobacco thrips.
