Protein quality control (PQC) targets misfolded proteins for degradation. Ubr1 is a key E3 ligase in PQC; it requires HSP70 for this function. We show direct involvement of the HSP70 ATP cycle in Ubr1 PQC, suggesting a model for protein triage involving a kinetic "race" between HSP-mediated folding and Ubr1-dependent ubiquitination.
