The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered a key reaction forelectrochemical energy conversion but slow kinetics hamper application inelectrolyzers, metal-air batteries and other applications that rely onsustainable protons from water oxidation. In this review, the prospect ofepitaxial perovskite oxides for the OER at room temperature in alkaline mediais reviewed with respect to fundamental insight into systematic trends of theactivity. First, we thoroughly define the perovskite structure and itsparameter space. Then, the synthesis methods used to make electrocatalyticepitaxial perovskite oxide are surveyed, and we classify the different kinds ofelectrodes that can be assembled for electrocatalytic investigations. Wediscuss the semiconductor physics of epitaxial perovskite electrodes and theirconsequences for the interpretation of catalytic results. Prototypicalmechanisms of the OER are introduced and comparatively discussed. OERinvestigations on epitaxial perovskite oxides are comprehensively surveyed andselected trends are graphically highlighted. The review concludes with a shortperspective on opportunities for future electrocatalytic research on epitaxialperovskite oxide systems.
