The ABCD matrix formalism describing paraxial propagation of optical beamsacross linear systems is generalized to arbitrary beam trajectories. As aby-product of this study, a one-to-one correspondence between the extended ABCDmatrix formalism presented here and the quantum mechanical translation operatoris established.
