A simple methodology for evaluating the dynamic-range of gas avalanchedetectors in the laboratory is presented and discussed. It comprises two tools:a charge injector of tunable gain which transfers radiation-induced amplifiedelectron swarms to the investigated detector to mimic events with well definedprimary-ionization spectra, and a systematic approach for measuring thedetector's discharge probability. The methodology, applicable to a broad rangeof detectors, is applied here for instability studies in various single-stageTHGEM and THGEM-WELL structures. The results indicate upon a somewhat largerattainable dynamic range in a single-stage THGEM operated with additionalmultiplication in the induction gap.
