In the dielectronic recombination (DR), a free (or quasi- free) electron is resonantly captured by an ion under the ex- citation of one or several bound electrons, and is stabilize d afterwards due to photoemission. For many years, this res- onant capture process has attracted much interest, both by experiment and theory, since it helps to explore relativist ic and quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects on the elec- tronic structure of heavy atomic systems. In order to in- vestigate these effects, a number of DR experiments have been carried out recently by applying relativistic collisi ons of highly-charged projectile ions. At the GSI storage ring ESR, for example, the K − LL resonant transfer and exci- tation of (finally) helium-like uranium U 90+ ions and their subsequent radiative decay have been studied in detail (1). While most of the measured data are generally well under- stood within the framework of Dirac's relativistic theory, a considerable discrepancy was found for the angular dis- tribution of the K 1 hypersatellite radiation following the K − L1/2L3/2 resonant electron capture (2). In all previous theoretical investigations, however, only the electric-dipole (E1) radiation has been taken into ac- count in analyzing the angular distribution of the K 1 lines. To understand the role of the higher, non-dipole terms in the electron-photon interaction we re-investigated the an- gular properties of the characteristic radiation followin g the DR of high-Z ions. By making use of the density matrix theory, we derived in particular a general expression for th e angular distribution of the hypersatellite HS photons emit- ted in the | dJdi → | fJf i + HS decay (3)
