We present a theoretical study of atomic ionization due to an XUV pulse inthe presence of an infrared laser. Within the strong field approximation andconsidering the periodicity and symmetry of the transition matrix we show thatthe photoelectron spectrum can be described from the contribution during onlyone (or half) infrared cycle. These symmetry and periodicity properties impressselection rules which destructively cancel certain sideband orders favoringothers. In particular, we analyze the photoionization of Argon in fourgeometrical arrangements of the polarization vector and the photoelectronmomentum direction.
