The thermal properties of antiferromagnetic films -- in particular, thesquare-lattice antiferromagnet -- subjected to an external magnetic fieldpointing into the direction of the staggered magnetization are explored. Theeffective field theory analysis of the free energy density is carried out totwo-loop order. While the emphasis is on finite temperature, we also discussthe behavior of the magnetization and staggered magnetization at zerotemperature. Our results imply that the staggered magnetization increases inpresence of the magnetic field -- reminiscent of magnetic catalysis. Mostremarkably, if staggered and magnetic field strength are kept fixed, themagnetization initially grows when temperature increases.
