Geo-Synchronous orbits are appealing for Solar or astrophysical observatoriesbecause they permit continuous data downlink at high rates. The radiationenvironment in these orbits presents unique challenges, however. This paperdescribes both the characteristics of the radiation environment inGeo-Synchronous orbit and the mechanisms by which this radiation generatesbackgrounds in photon detectors. Shielding considerations are described, and apreliminary shielding design for the proposed Wide-Field InfraRed SurveyTelescope observatory is presented as a reference for future space telescopeconcept studies that consider a Geo-Synchronous orbit.
