The single and collective particle interaction with spatially localizedwavepackets is analytically and numerically studied. The role of the finitespatial width of the wavepacket on the momentum and energy variation ofparticles passing through the wavepacket is investigated. The range of validityof analytical results, based on a perturbative approach, is investigated andclearly defined. Strongly nonlinear effects are shown to qualitativelydifferentiate the collective particle dynamics, for larger interactionstrengths. These effects are manifested through the complex dependency ofaveraged momentum variations on the initial particle momentum, as shown bydissecting a particle distribution in terms of partitioning the ensemble ofparticles with respect to their initial momentum. The results provideunderstanding on the relation between single and collective particle dynamicsand the emerging of complexity for weak and strong particle interactions withlocalized wavepackets.
