We formulate axisymmetric general relativity in terms of realAshtekar--Barbero variables. We study the constraints and equations of motionand show how the Kerr, Schwarzschild and Minkowski solutions arise. We alsodiscuss boundary conditions. This opens the possibility of a midisuperspacequantization using loop quantum gravity techniques for spacetimes with axialsymmetry and time dependence.
