We present estimates of magnetic field strengths in the interstellar media ofstarburst galaxies derived from measurements of Zeeman splitting associatedwith OH megamasers. The results for eight galaxies with Zeeman detectionssuggest that the magnetic energy density in the interstellar medium ofstarburst galaxies is comparable to their hydrostatic gas pressure, as in theMilky Way. We discuss the significant uncertainties in this conclusion, andpossible measurements that could reduce these uncertainties. We also comparethe Zeeman splitting derived magnetic field estimates to magnetic fieldstrengths estimated using synchrotron fluxes and assuming that the magneticfield and cosmic rays have comparable energy densities, known as the "minimumenergy" argument. We find that the minimum energy argument systematicallyunderestimates magnetic fields in starburst galaxies, and that the conditionsthat would be required to produce agreement between the minimum energy estimateand the Zeeman derived estimate of interstellar medium magnetic fields areimplausible. The conclusion that magnetic fields in starburst galaxies exceedthe minimum energy magnetic fields is consistent with starburst galaxiesadhering to the linearity of the FIR-radio correlation.
