T HE plasma membrane of epithelial cells is polarized by division into apical and basolateral domains of unique protein and lipid composition (reviewed in Simons and Fuller, 1985). Development and maintenance of plasma membrane polarity is achieved by the sorting of membrane constituents. Both membrane and secretory proteins must be recognized as apical or basolateral, segregated from each other, and delivered to their correct final destinations. This brief review will summarize recent investigations into these sorting events and discuss possible mechanisms of recognition and segregation.
