Although the bibliography on GIs keeps increasing, there is skepticism regarding the impact and effectiveness of GI policy. This paper deals with four categories of products in the fruit and vegetable sector of the PDOs and PGIs of the EU. It examines their relationship with tradition and innovation and assesses their economic, social, and environmental impact using a mixed quantitative and qualitative method. The findings of this study suggest that PDOs/PGIs are anchored to the notion of tradition and exhibit an innovative character. Regarding sustainability, a spectrum of successful/moderately successful/‘failed’ products exist for each sustainability dimension
