The game of  sepak raga  which involves kicking a rattan ball among several players has been played in the Southeast Asian countries of Malaya, Singapore, Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Laos and the Philippines since the thirteenth century. It has been included in the Malay school curriculum since the 1920s. The indigenous game evolved into an organised game in Thailand and Malaya in 1931 and 1935 respectively. It consists of two teams of players kicking the ball across the net to score points. Associations were formed in Burma, Singapore and Malaysia in 1953, 1959 and 1960 respectively, to develop the game. It was included as a sport in the South East Asian Peninsula (SEAP) Games in 1965, the same year in which the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation was established (ASTAF). Since 1966 the game was known as Sepak Takraw. ASTAF organised the first Southeast Asian Sepak Takraw championships in 1977 and the Asian competition in 1979. The SEAP Games became known as the SEA Games from 1977. Sepak Takraw associations were founded in Indonesia in 1971, Thailand in 1983 and the Philippines in 1984. The Olympic Council of Asia included Sepak Takraw in the Asian Games in 1990 due to the increasing development and popularity of the game.
