Marica and Paolo courageously shared a turbulent and moving analysis. This discussion focuses on the presence of Paolo as a mirroring and idealizing selfobject, as one who facilitated the healing of a “vertical scar”, the vertical split that shaped Marica’s self. Paolo in his prolonged empathic immersion as an idealized selfobject enabled Marica to merge with him, and helps her to heal her fragmented self from her fifteen surgeries in a process that restored Marica’s whole self. Paolo knows his own self, knows his own subjectivity, but he is not preoccupied with it. While in a way his own subjectivity fills the analytic space, he does not let it crowd out Marica’s. He does not give in to his subjectivity, rather he evenly suspends it in order to leave space for Marica’s self to emerge. It is an ethical attitude in which a virtual self emerges into the world through a virtual selfobject, bearing a total selfobject empathic awareness.
