This paper reports on the influence of material positioning on the microstructure and the mechanical behaviour of the friction stir welded AA5083/AA6082 dissimilar joint. The 6 mm thick plates were friction stir welded using triangular pin profile with flutes. The tool rotational speed and traverse speed were kept constant while varying materials positioning (800 rpm and 60 mm/min, respectively). The energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) revealed the presence of elements responsible for the formation of strengthening particles at the stir zone. The microstructural analysis showed the refined grains at the stir zone. The microhardness increase was observed when AA6082 was positioned on the advancing side than when AA5083 on the advancing side. The specimens produced when AA5083 on the advancing side had higher ultimate tensile strength compared to those produced when AA6082 on the advancing side. However, the specimens produced when AA6082 on advancing showed higher percentage elongation compared to those produced when AA5083 on the advancing side. The bending of base materials managed to achieve a 180° bend without signs of cracks, while the welded joints managed a 90° bend and started cracking on the root welds along the butt interface.
