This literature review was part of a larger study that investigated research on how a transpersonal perspective on music-based vocal interventions may assist the therapeutic process. Transpersonal experiences were seen as those in which the identity or self extends beyond the individual or personal to encompass wider aspects of the human condition, the psyche, and beyond. The central argument of this review is that these experiences help to demonstrate the importance of both individual and collective senses of self, fostering a greater appreciation for positive transformation of vocal challenges. This article reviews current scholarly literature on the voice from several vantagepoints, highlighting interventions that can enhance vocal understanding, health, and performance. Implications of this review found that methods of creative expression in the form of music-based vocal interventions had a beneficial effect on novice singers. Areas for further exploration include the importance of creative modalities in overcoming vocal challenges.
