In a time and age when the Internet is becoming a growing part of our daily lives, and when obesity is the modern world’s main epidemic, this research aims at studying the use of social media by actors of the bariatric surgery field. Twenty Bariatric surgeons and patients were interviewed on the perceived benefits, challenges, and ethical concerns to their presence on social media. The results were consistent in both groups and shed light mostly on a lack of regulation of the content posted online, but as well on the will of both surgeons and patients to exchange in a more efficient, transparent and ethical manner. Our study provides healthcare authorities, educators, and practices with a set of recommendations to help bariatric surgery enter the 2.0 age.
