In the present study, geoelectric properties of sand-bentonite mixes (used widely as barriers and buffer material) are evaluated using electric resistivity technique(ERT) combined with conventional geotechnical characterization methods. This paper discusses an experimental study to enhance the reliability of ERT for characterizing compacted sand-bentonite mixes for a wide range of applications. The electrical resistivity tests were conducted using fabricated small-scale soil resistivity box conforming to ASTM G57-06. on individual soil types (fine sand, medium sand, bentonite), as well as fine sand and medium sand mixed with different bentonite content. Based on observations, electrical resistivity/conductivity of sand-bentonite mixes are found different for fine and medium sand because of difference in their surface conductivity due to presence of bentonite, which is also represented through the developed correlations. The influence of parameters such as volumetric water content, dry-density, void-ratio, bentonite content and temperature on electrical resistivity values are also studied.
