As the depletion of fossil fuel is being a great threat to the automotive industry, it motivated to develop the alternative energy resources. Currently, biodiesel is gaining importance as an alternative fuel with respect to internal combustion engine. In this study, the parameters such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), load and blended fuel (diesel, biodiesel and 0.5% by volume of Ethyl Hexyl Nitrate) were optimized by Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array for three factors and three levels. Regression equations were established to predict the brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption by incorporating independently controllable process factors. Taguchi and Taguchi Gray analysis were used, respectively, to have the separate and combined optimum of brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. Based on the results, it was found that brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption of this investigation were 30.2% and 0.305 kg/kW-hr, respectively, when they were optimized separately. The combination of 10% EGR, 100% load and 30% BD+E0.5 (30% biodiesel and 0.5% EHN and remaining diesel by volume) yielded the combined optimum of brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption.
