In this work, the porous-carbon materials were successful synthesized via pre-oxidation and high-temperature carbonization treatment used the cotton fibers as raw materials. Activated carbon with high adsorption performance was prepared by the ZnCl 2 - or K 2 CO 3 -activated pyrolysis of waste cotton fabric. The structure of as-prepared samples was systematically characterized by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM, and BET. The adsorption performance was measured by using the iodine and methylene blue as the target dyes. The results showed that the products are amorphous structure, and is enriched in oxygen functional groups on the surface. The pore size distribution curves showed that COTTON-C-K is rich in macropores, COTTON-C-KZn are rich in micropore and mesopore, and COTTON-C-Zn contains more micropores. The COTTON-C-KZn showed higher adsorption performance toward the I 2  and MB, with a Q I2  and Q MB  of 1331and 445 mg/g, respectively, which surpasses that of commercial-activated carbon.
