A novel phase was fabricated using a liquid crystal medium, and its feasibility as an ion-conducting material was explored. The intermediate phase comprised a strong polar compound and a low-molecular-weight nematogen, which was insoluble in the compound. Nanoscale phase segregation occurred between the host nematogen and guest polar compound upon dispersing a small amount of the polar compound into the nematogen. This nano-segregated phase was characterized through polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the ionic conductivity of the nano-segregated phase was qualitatively evaluated by voltage holding ratio measurements.
