Two coordination polymers [Sm 2 (3,5-pdc)(1,2-bdc) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] n  ( 1 ) and {[Dy 2 (3,5-pdc)(1,2-bdc) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]·2H 2 O} n  ( 2 ) were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The crystal structures were tested by X-ray single crystal diffraction.  1  was 3D porous network structure while  2  was 2D layered structure. They both emitted the characteristic fluorescence of Sm(III) or Dy(III) with ultraviolet light excitations. The lifetimes of excited states for Sm(III) and Dy(III) were measured.
