Wheat straw is a light-weight, hollow biological material. It plays an important role in supporting weight and resisting storms beating. Here, an in-situ investigation on the three-dimensional microstructure evolution of wheat straw under tensile load was carried out by the synchrotron radiation computed tomography technology. The gradient structures and their important evolution phenomena (e.g. multi-point initiation of cracks, crack jumping and deflection) were clearly observed and tracked. Quantitative analysis showed that the gradient layered structure will induce gradient mechanic behavior and play an important role in coordinating the overall mechanical properties, which may provide optimization design strategies for lightweight composites.
