The impact response of shear deformable sandwich cylindrical shells composed of two face layers and a functionally graded (FG) porous core is investigated. The mass density and elastic moduli of FG porous core are assumed to vary along the thickness in terms of the coefficients of mass density and foam, whose relationships are determined by employing the typical mechanical characteristics of an open-cell metal foam. Governing equations are derived using the first-order shear deformation shell theory and Hamilton’s principle. The contact force is achieved based on linearized Hertzian contact law. The Duhamel integration is applied to find the transverse displacement of porous sandwich shell. Results show that the core thickness, impact velocity, foam type, foam coefficient, and masses of impactor and shell play important roles on the impact response of sandwich porous shells.
