This research examines associations between maternal depressive symptoms and parenting practices among Head Start eligible, low-income families. Among 3,780 mothers, four types of childcare were identified: Head Start (n = 2124), informal care (n = 270), other center-based care (n = 638), and exclusive parental care (n = 748). The study found that mothers with higher depressive symptoms engaging in less positive parenting practices. Mothers whose children were cared for by parents or informal childcare have higher depressive symptoms and more neglectful and unsafe parenting practices than those with children enrolled in Head Start. Low-income families should aim to enroll their children in formal childcare including Head Start.
