Migrant African youth move within global and local racial hierarchies as they make space for themselves. This paper uses photostories to examine spatial practices of African youth in New York City, specifically where, how, and with whom they form belongings and claim space. The research comes from a photostory institute conducted with 10 newcomer African youth. These youth documented intersections of Africa and NYC in visual depictions of their embodiment in/of NYC. Their documentations narrate the necessary socio-spatial attachments across race and social position that place youth in a new home while holding to their senses of self.
