Transnational marriage, involving mostly young women in Ethiopia and migrant men, has effects on the society in Ethiopia. This study analyses how transnational marriage is envisaged by and how this imagination affects the lives of women and intra-and inter-family relations. The analysis relies on qualitative data collected in interviews, FGDs, observations, and document analysis. The findings from a triangulated data reveal that the narratives of affluence and the imaginary success linked to this marriage creates a fragile negotiation power among women in quest of migrant husbands, which eventually leaves them involuntary singles and single-mothers. It also highlights dysfunctional relations and intra-family disorder stemming from contrary desires of household members in the marriage and its returns as an inherent feature. Inter-household conflict and lasting enmity is another constituent of the social ills of transnational marriage.
