In March 1972, the Riverina College of Advanced Education opened a Study Centre in the border-town of Albury. Reflecting on her return to study as a mature-age student in 1973, former student Eileen Clark stated that it was ‘the beginning of feminism’. Leading histories of the Australian Women’s Liberation Movement often pay scant attention to the stories of regional and rural women. Using original oral history recordings and the Charles Sturt University Archive, I explore the role of the Study Centre in bringing feminist principles to Albury-Wodonga. In doing so, I challenge the metropolitan-centred gaze of popular memory surrounding second-wave feminism in 1970s Australia.
