In this paper, I explore an under-researched aspect of migration, that is, the contradicting emotions experienced by diaspora concerning their original land. Specifically, I consider the ways in which ambivalence is evoked and expressed in the Australian – Hungarian homeland-related diasporic discourses following the Fall of Communism. To investigate how diaspora members accept a new and yet paradoxically ‘historic’ homeland, I employ Bakhtin’s philosophy of language and human action. In particular, I examine three aspects of ambivalence. First, I focus on the organizational level. Second, I inspect the homecoming experiences of individual diaspora members. Third, I reveal how the changes in Hungary, or their absence, created ambivalence within the diaspora.
