Owing to the remarkable differences in structural periods of vibration, cable-stayed bridges and their adjacent spans are highly susceptible to earthquake-induced pounding damages. Based on the proposed simplified analysis model, parametric analyses are conducted to investigate the effect of pounding on the seismic demands of a cable-stayed bridge and its adjacent spans. The results indicate that compared with the cases of conventional girder bridges, the contact durations in the event of seismic pounding between cable-stayed bridges and their approach spans are relatively longer, which leads to a substantial increase in the force and displacement demands of approach bridges.
