The major objective of this paper is to investigate the seismic behavior of bridge-deck-pier-foundation type structures incorporating both structural and soil yielding using a realistic computational model. The model, developed in OpenSees finite element framework, was calibrated and validated using experimental results. Several numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the behavior of fixed-base and rocking foundation systems under realistic earthquake shakings. The study found that incorporating rocking foundation design reduces the peak deck drift due to flexure, peak acceleration on the deck, and the column base shear and moment by more than 50% when compared to fixed-base design.
