This article reflects on the artistic use of fictional televisual style of detective diagramming, or ‘serial pinboarding’ (Ganzert 2020), in Room 22 of the group exhibition Art Weekend Belgrade (AWB ’21). As a collaborative project that blended different artistic positionalities, the DIY installation in the Room 22 echoed styles of fictional detectives’ pinboarding, bringing a televisual form into the physical environment of the exhibition venue – the defunct and hollowed Hotel Belgrade. The enigmatic space – the shell of a hotel room – was a site of potent present materiality that coalesced with ephemerality of its past life. To decode this space, the project used choreographic and mnemonic properties of detective diagramming to invite the visitors to partake in uncovering unknowable bits of history of the Hotel and its surrounding ‘Štajga’ (the socialist-era Belgrade’s seedy neighbourhood). Through a feigned private-eye investigation dramaturgy, over the course of the exhibition, in Room 22 we found out several things. Firstly, a broad pop-cultural recognisability of the televisual diagrammatic genre facilitates trans-cultural and intergenerational contributions, akin to a by-chance social mudlarking. The newly uncovered historical treasure-specs from the visitors’ first-hand knowledge and embodied memories amalgamated with some unverifiable gossip, and imaginaries about the life of the Hotel and its area. Secondly, the participatory pinboarding formed a kind of visual-sensorial ‘investigative aesthetic’ (Fuller and Weizman 2021) that bridged the history of the venue with its present-day tangible and spectral properties. It is argued that the mediated effect was similar to the ‘atmospherics’ (Hann 2020), an affective property that blended different realities and temporalities of the Room 22, the Hotel, the AWB ’21 event at large, as situated in the present-day Belgrade. Finally, the detective-style of diagrammatic pinboarding, in this case as an artistic play-structure, also uncovered deeper epistemological questions about diagramming with weak signals and superimposed lines.
