This paper stakes a claim on the survival strategies found in Black feminist performance practices through attention/intention of breath as care. At its core, this paper questions what it means to care for Black women to examine the ways in which artists and playwrights have created spaces of care for themselves and others. My emphasis is to care for Black bodies that are discarded and, in doing so, I arrive at breath. When I’m attentive to the breath in my body, I question how breath can be envisioned as a praxis of care for Black women, what are the creative possibilities of breath as an intervention, an aesthetic or ritual? To answers these questions, I track various moments of breath, breathlessness and breath-taking moments in pursuit of the role of individual and community care in Selina Thompson’s Immersion (2021) and salt. (2017) and Mojisola Adebayo’s Interrogation of Sandra Bland (2017).
