This article examines the military-political situation around the Crimean peninsula. Three issues are discussed in detail: (a) the historical roots of Crimea’s contemporary problems, (b) the events of 2014, and (c) the military importance of the peninsula and the present system of its defense. The text is accompanied by photographs and maps. Being a native Crimean, a citizen of both Ukraine and Russia, the author considers the stated topic from the point of view of a direct witness and participant in the events. This corrects the current clear numerical superiority of those foreign researchers who either were not present in the Crimea during the events of 2014 or never visited the territory of the peninsula at all.
