The article uses police and city administration files to explore the local level management of commercial sex in Cologne between the years 1956 and 1972, which was increasingly determined by processes of concealment, displacement and segregation. Of particular interest is the  Sperrbezirk  or ‘restricted area’ intended to banish women selling sex from public view, which is viewed historically in combination with the tolerance of so-called ‘prostitute residences’ and the opening of an Eros-Center in 1972. These local measures are analysed in their implementation, with a focus on the impact of city administrators, residents and women who sold sex in determining the moral geographies of the city’s sex industry.
