This study considers nutrient content of hydrophytic host populations ( Impatiens capensis  and  Justicia americana ) and their obligate holoparasite,  Cuscuta gronovii . Comparisons of mineral content in aboveground organs between non-parasitized (control) and parasitized plants were also evaluated. While  Cuscuta  appeared to have limited impact on plant size for  J. americana , the parasite did foster decreases in biomass for  I. capensis . When differences in mineral content were observed between hosts and controls, parasitized plants maintained higher nutrient levels. No differences in macronutrient content were observed in parasitized  J. americana  relative to uninfected controls. In contrast, there were elevated N, P, and S in  I. capensis  hosts compared to uninfected plants. Although it is possible that  Cuscuta  parasitism enhanced nutrient uptake in  I. capensis , the appearance of higher macronutrients could reflect selective foraging by  Cuscuta . That is, given the option between multiple hosts,  Cuscuta  may have the ability to select hosts with higher nutritional status. There were also higher Mn concentrations in both host species when parasitized, and higher Fe, Cu, and Al in parasitized  I. capensis . Aluminum was particularly high (&gt;1000 ppm) in  I. capensis  hosts, possibly reflecting the role of Al in eliciting antioxidant and/or pathogenic defenses in parasitized plants.
