XGP6 was produced by incorporating a modifying agent COP6 into xanthan gum (XG) to be aimed at polymer flooding. COP6 was the abbreviation for chloride-substituted octyl phenoxy polyoxyethylene(6). In contrast to XG only with thickening property, XGP6 showed both good interfacial activity and better thickening performance. Continuous shear of XGP6 brines was conducted at oil reservoir pressures (5–20 MPa) and 45 °C, and a significant pressure-thickening behavior was found. The viscoelastic effect of the polymer was strengthened substantially after XG was modified, and the XGP6 brines displayed dominantly elastic behavior in brine above 0.5 g/L. The oil-flooding parameters such as the resistance and residual resistance factors were quite high for XGP6 in brine compared to XG. The appropriately applied permeability of XGP6 was 30–300 (10 −3  μm 2 ). It was found by NMR imaging that the injection of small amounts of XGP6 increased apparently the sweep domain of water.
