The purpose of this study was to explore college students’ perceptions of poverty and if a change in these perceptions occurred from the beginning to the end of the semester. Self-reported perceptions of people in poverty were provided by 112 undergraduate education majors and graduate level sociology and school psychology majors. Results indicated that undergraduate students had more negative perceptions, while school psychology students had the least negative perceptions. Results suggest that all students, regardless of course of study, require more intensive training in the needs of diverse students and students living in poverty, including authentic experiences and direct instruction.

Perceptions of Poverty across Three Disciplines at One Urban University
