Urbanization is associated with lower fishing participation due to reduced awareness of fishing, access to or convenience of viable fishing opportunities, and availability of fishing locations. Iowa Department of Natural Resources initiated its Community Fishing Program to address the challenges of angling recruitment, retention, and re-activation in Iowa’s urbanizing populations. To guide the program, we conducted a general population survey to determine constraints and program preferences for potential, lapsed, and active anglers residing in urban and suburban areas. Approximately 71% of urban Iowans were interested or active in fishing; interest related to childhood initiation into fishing, gender, age, race, and relocating frequently as a child. Likewise, perception of constraints to fishing and interest in educational/outreach programs depended on childhood initiation into fishing, gender, age, race, rurality during childhood, and current fishing activity level.

Factors affecting interest in fishing, program preferences, and constraints by potential, lapsed, and active anglers in urban areas of Iowa
